ECMA 2010 Encourages Greening

(Sydney, NS) - As music industry professionals, artists and fans prepare to flock to Sydney for the 2010 East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference, staff and volunteers are conscious of the event's carbon footprint. For this initiative, ECMA 2010 entrusts a four-person greening committee to help ensure that the event remains as green as possible.

Co-chairs Stephanie McLean and Lenore Parsley have developed a simple check-list as part of their greening strategy so everyone can take part in the process.

"One of the biggest challenges in turning such a large event into a green event is convincing participants how easy it can be," said Parsley. "Part of what we're trying to do is educate about the simplicity of greening."

Some simple steps the Green Committee is encouraging other committees and volunteers to take include: carpooling to events, reducing paper use in the planning stages, drinking tap water and re-using bottles, and limiting single use items such as paper napkins and paper cups. The Greening Committee will also confirm that every venue has the proper recycling receptacles available, signage is reused or printed on recycled materials and the majority of volunteer registration is done online.

"We are asking that a conscious effort be made to keep ECMA 2010 green, and so far the green theme is being received very well by all committees involved, as well as staff and other participants," Parsley added.

The 2010 Cape Breton event is an annual event organized by the East Coast Music Association as a critical part of its mission statement. The 2010 event will take place in Sydney, NS from March 4-7, 2010.
