Success of East Coast Music Week Moncton 2012 strengthens ECMA Financial Position
On Tuesday September 25, 2012 the East Coast Music Association held its Annual General Meeting at the Delta Halifax.
Mike Kennedy, outgoing Chair of the Board of Directors, reported that 2012 featured a number of highlights for the East Coast Music Association including:
• A highly successful East Coast Music Week (ECMW) in April 2012 in Moncton featuring over 30 Award Presentations to East Coast musicians and music industry professionals, a five day music festival that literally turned Moncton on its ear, and a three day International Export Buyers Program.
• An estimated $6 – 9 million in direct and indirect economic impact for the city of Moncton and Province of New Brunswick.
• Growth in the number of business development opportunities generated through our renowned International Export Buyers Program under the leadership of Shelley Nordstrom.
• Elimination of ECMA’s long term debt under the direction of Executive Director Su Hutchinson.
• The appointment of new Executive Director Scott Burke.
The ECMA Annual Report summarizes ECMA activities during the year, as well as Audited Financial Statements for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012.
Outgoing Treasurer Heather Gibson presented the Audited Financial Statements of the Association. With revenues and expenditures in the $1.6 million range, the success of ECMW 2012 led to a surplus of $78,606 which served to substantially reduce the association’s accumulated deficit to $15,721. The treasurer thanked the entire ECMA staff for their efforts over the last three years to return the organization to a position of financial stability.
The 2012 International Export Buyers Program at ECMW included the very successful “Canadian Music. East Coast Style” Export Buyers showcase of East Coast music talent alongside two days of pre-scheduled business development “Live Performance Pitching” sessions. International export missions during the year included successful partnerships and showcases at the Folk Alliance International in Memphis, Tennessee, and the 2012 Song Summit in Sydney, Australia.
The Annual Report outlined several operational achievements for ECMA, including a new custom-built web-based membership database and impressive online member profile capabilities. The submissions process for ECMA awards and stages has also improved immensely with the help of Cape Breton-based festival software management company Marcato Digital Solutions.
New Regional Representatives to the ECMA Board of Directors were elected and include Andrew Fedora from Nova Scotia, Stephen MacDonald from Cape Breton, Adam Gould from New Brunswick, Dean Stairs from Newfoundland and Labrador, and Paul Alan from Prince Edward Island. Tammy Milbury and Alan Syliboy were also elected to the Board as Supernumerary Directors.
They join the remaining members of the Board Dawn Beaton, Shawn Bostick, Charles Coll, Heather Gibson, and Bob Hallett.
Mike Kennedy acknowledged the hard work and dedication of the members of the Board, and especially outgoing members Ryan Conrod, Doug Gallant, Jeff Liberty, Tanya Sieliakus, and Rob Steele. Following the AGM Mike Kennedy will take on an ex-officio Past Chair position. The recent passing of Honourary Lifetime ECMA Director Sam Sniderman of Sam the Record Man fame was acknowledged and a deep appreciation for Mr. Sniderman’s support and promotion of East Coast music and musicians was expressed.
The great success of East Coast Music Week 2012 combined with excellent financial results ideally positions ECMA to produce a fitting event for the 25th Anniversary Music Week in Halifax, March 6 – 10, 2013. ECMA members and the public are encouraged to share their ideas on how to celebrate this remarkable milestone.
