ECMA Annual General Meeting: Election Results and 2014 Highlights

September . 24 . 2014

Following a sold-out event in Charlottetown, and with a new Executive Director and Artist Relations Manager in place, the East Coast Music Association (ECMA) is thrilled to be planning the 2015 event in St. John’s, NL.

In April, after a lengthy national search, the Board of Directors was happy to announce that Andy McLean had joined the team as the new Executive Director. Andy attended Eastlink East Coast Music Week (ECMW) and officially began with the organization shortly thereafter. In July, ECMA welcomed Chantal Caissie, to the position of Artist and Member Relations Manager. ECMA is excited to have Andy and Chantal on the team.

ECMW returned to Charlottetown to showcase and celebrate the region’s artists and industry, April 2-6, 2014. Welcoming the highest number of sponsors in the events history, the sponsorship team, led by Andree Gracie, brought in close to $1million in cash and in-kind sponsorship. 14,000 audience members -  including 5,800 non-residents - packed sold-out venues throughout the city, taking part in a truly Atlantic Canadian celebration. 1,231 music industry professionals from Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Iceland, France and Australia and 709 performing musicians were registered delegates at the event.

ECMW 2014 included the 13th edition of the International Export Buyers Program and Industry Conference, five days of sold-out artist showcases, a sold-out Industry Awards brunch that recognized the work of more than 30 industry professionals, and a sold-out Gala Awards Show. 50 showcasing events took place at ECMW 2014, with an additional 26 conference sessions and over 500 pre-scheduled one-on-one business meetings.  Our new program Music in Motion saw the creation of 10 music videos and more than $145,000 was paid to the 709 showcasing artists at ECMW 2014, an increase of $15,000 from 2013.

It is estimated that the confirmed early direct business negotiations resulted in more than four international booking agent/promoter signings, two Canadian agent signings, 224 confirmed shows, 45 International festival booking contracts, 67 Canadian festival performance bookings, 81 international tours, six film and television music placement licensing deals, five label/publicity contracts, and 13 showcasing and touring business development opportunities.

ECMW 2014 also presented the first in a series of activities with Showcase Scotland Expo. This agreement is new for the organization and we look forward to exchanges between ECMA members and Scottish artists and industry.

“ECMA thanks all members for their contributions, commitment, and creative brilliance that continue to make the East Coast one of the most important creative communities, not just in Canada – but in the world,” said Gibson. “We look forward to ECMW 2015 in St. John’s, NL, and for ECMA taking on a stronger role as an advocate and voice for the music industry in the region.”

ECMA is pleased to welcome new board members Chuck Teed (NB), Josh Hogan (NS) and Kate Gracey Stewart (PE) for a two-year term.
