Wellness One-on-Ones

Do you have concerns about your own, or someone else’s mental health or substance use? Have you had difficulty accessing supports you feel would help you? Have you self diagnosed based on symptoms and would like a professional opinion? Are you looking for the first step to achieving mental wellness?

Throughout the festival Errin Williams, licensed clinical therapist and social worker with over 10 years of mental health experience will sit down with you for Wellness One-on-One session during ECMA 2019. These sessions will be one hour long held in a private, confidential, space and provide the opportunity to discuss your concerns and begin building a plan to achieve your mental wellness goals.

Out of this session the following could occur:

  • A discussion of your current situation
  • Completion of a comprehensive symptom checklist to help you understand what may or may not be occurring in your life or in the life of your loved one
  • Brainstorm and determine appropriate and useful services / supports you could access in your community
  • Referral to services / support organizations
  • General discussion of mental health diagnoses and treatments based on current best practices
  • Discussion of strategies you could incorporate in your life.

Mental Health Emergencies
In all four Atlantic provinces you can call 911 when you are facing a mental health emergency.

A mental health emergency is a life threatening situation in which an individual is imminently threatening harm to self or others, severely disorientated or out of touch with reality, or otherwise is distraught and out of control.

Examples of a Mental Health Emergency includes:
• Acting on a suicide threat
• Homicidal or threatening behavior
• Self- injury needing immediate medical attention
• Severely impaired by drugs or alcohol
• Highly erratic or unusual behaviour that indicates very unpredictable behaviour.

Mental Health Crisis
Each province has services to assist a person facing a mental health crisis. A mental health crisis is a non-life threatening situation in which an individual is exhibiting extreme emotional disturbance or behavioural distress, considering harm to self or others, disoriented or out of touch with reality, has a compromised ability to function, or is otherwise agitated and unable to be calmed.

Examples of a Mental Health Crisis includes:
• Talking about suicide threats
• Talking about threatening behavior
• Self-injury, but not needing immediate medical attention
• Alcohol or substance abuse
• Highly erratic or unusual behavior
• Eating disorders
• Not taking their prescribed psychiatric medications
• Emotionally distraught, very depressed, angry or anxious

Nova Scotia

The Nova Scotia Mental Health Crisis Telephone Line is delivered by the Mental Health Mobile Crisis Team (MHMCT). This provincial service provides crisis intervention for children, youth and adults experiencing a mental health crisis or mental distress.

The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to support callers who present with suicidal thoughts, self-harming thoughts or behaviours, overwhelming anxiety, difficulty coping with distress, psychotic or distorted thinking, depression, substance use difficulties or any other self-identified mental health concerns. Crisis is self-defined by the individual calling for support.

The crisis line also supports families, friends, community agencies and others to manage mental health crisis through education, outreach and consultation.

Offers telephone intervention across Nova Scotia and mobile response in most communities in Halifax Regional Municipality.

The Mental Health Crisis Centre provides 24 hour telephone based crisis intervention by professionally trained Crisis Interveners. This confidential service is available toll free across Newfoundland Labrador. This service is open to anyone in crisis, their caregivers or loved ones. The 24 hour crisis line is also available to health professionals on a consultative basis by phone. Crisis can include but is not limited to:

  • Relationships with family or friends
  • Addiction Issues
  • Financial Difficulties
  • School or work stress
  • Grief or Loss
  • Abuse or Traumatic Events
