The Tortoise the Hare & the Millionaire is a blues-rock power trio from Fredericton, NB and consists of Matt Carr on guitar, lap steel, and vocals; Ted Nicholson on drums and backing vocals; and Eric Allard on bass guitar and backing vocals. Our music draws inspiration from artists such as the Record Company, Led Zeppelin, the Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and RL Burnside and combines elements of blues, rock, and rockabilly with driving guitar solos, simple catchy lyrical hooks, and improvised jam breaks to create something original and fresh.
The Tortoise the Hare & the Millionaire formed outside a the Record Company concert during Harvest Jazz and Blues 2015. Matt and Ted had been playing together for about a dozen years and Eric joined the pair in the fall of 2014. Inspired by our conversation with members of the Record Company, we scrapped everything we had been doing up to that point and decided to start fresh with a renewed sense of direction. We immediately started composing our own music.
While we dearly love our biggest fan – Ted’s five-year-old daughter Quinn – we decided we were ready to grow our audience beyond the confines of our basement rehearsal space in the summer of 2016. We began playing shows at venues throughout New Brunswick and we have had the pleasure of sharing the stage with local favorites Keith Hallett, The Hypochondriacs, Stephen Lewis and the Big Band of Fun, Wicked Vices, Quinn Bonnell, Josh Bravener, Jont and the Infinite Possibility , Slowcoaster’s Steven MacDougall, and StoneHouse.
We are very fortunate to have participated in Fest Forward 2K16 which consists of a music festival and professional development workshops for emerging bands. This allowed us to do a live recording with CHSR-FM and our songs spent several weeks on the CHSR Top 30 Charts.
