ECMA INDUSTRY INSIGHT - OWNED AUDIENCES

Many artists focus on growing followers, but there's another metric worth paying attention to: direct fan connections.

Email subscribers, fan club members, website subscribers, and SMS communities are often called "owned audiences" because they allow artists to communicate directly with supporters without relying on platform algorithms.

Social media remains an important discovery tool, but many music marketing experts recommend using it to guide fans toward channels you control, such as an email list or website.

The goal isn't to choose one or the other...it's to build both.

Dig Deeper:

1. Amuse (Music Distribution Platform)
They have a specific article called: "Rented versus Owned Channels"
Their core argument is that social platforms are discovery channels, while owned channels (website, email, direct communication) are where long-term audience relationships are built.

2. Sonikit (Music Marketing Platform)
Their article: "Owned Audience vs Rented Audience: The Marketing Concept Every Artist Should Understand" states that reach can disappear when algorithms change and that artists need to build channels they control directly.

3. Superfan Economy Research
FanCircles' 2025 report found that a very small percentage of listeners (superfans) generate a disproportionate share of streams, merch purchases, and ticket revenue. The implication is that deeper fan relationships often matter more than larger audiences. MIDiA Research has also been publishing extensive work around superfans, fandom behavior, and direct artist-fan relationships.

4. Direct-to-Fan Is Becoming Infrastructure
One of the more interesting developments this year was Universal Music Group partnering with EVEN, a direct-to-fan platform. Industry observers noted this as evidence that direct artist-fan relationships are increasingly viewed as infrastructure rather than an optional marketing tactic.
